Words for a World in Need

This week has been full of getting settled in a new state, new cities, and a whole new ministry. So I’ve decided to share this poem from Negotiating the Shadows, pages 76-77. It’s based on Mark 1:4-11.

New Thoughts

if I am beloved
as you are beloved
then why this gnawing void
that whispers of nothing
and threatens all possibilities?

was it easy for You to cloak Yourself
with love
let it flow into
Your being
as the Jordan’s waters
washed over You?

as spring approaches
I stand at another river
watching ice thaw into
rushing waters

no prophet stands here
no sky rending
no thunder booming
no voice echoing through the heavens
or anywhere else

I am no one’s beloved
this unrest I feel
keeping rhythm with
melting snow
would have me believe

the possibility of  standing
with You
in You
enters the emptiness
lights the darkness
opening my eyes
to see as You see

at the end of this wilderness journey
will my vision clear
will the lingering dark give way
to the flowing waters?

if You
then I . . .
